THIRTY-FIVE

The moonlight filtering through the barred window stirred a memory. Another night. Another place. The hush of blackout in Chelsea, the sirens for once silent in the darkened streets. The house too, was silent, shrouded in dust sheets. No one had been there since the start of the war. A stolen night huddled under a childhood eiderdown, her parents safe at their country house. A last night with Marianne. A last and a first. They had never spent a whole night together before. It felt wrong and right at the same time, creeping up the stairs like two naughty children although there was nothing childlike about the way they reached for one another.

All at once Jack felt her stiffen and pull back.

‘What’s wrong?’

She let out a long, shuddering breath. ‘Absolutely nothing. Everything’s perfect.’

She pressed herself against him once more, the heat of her body setting light to the fuse. Then fire consumed both of them, the flames reaching higher even as they cried out, ebbing to the warm glow in which they lay, sated for now.

Jack stroked her hair back from her face with his free hand, lifting her chin for another kiss. She met him there, eager for more, sighing in pleasure as his hands began to roam across her flesh, her skin soft as a butterfly’s wing beneath his fingers, trembling at their touch.

‘Temptress,’ he teased.

‘Hardly,’ she countered. Then she threw herself over him, pinning him down, her hair falling over her face, tickling his as their lips met.

‘I’ll show you temptress,’ she murmured.

‘Please do.’

Grey dawn was creeping round the blackout curtains by the time she had finished showing him. She never ceased to astonish him, this wild, wanton, wonderful woman. He tightened his arm around her, feeling her burrow deeper into his embrace.

‘Marry me,’ he murmured.

She went very still. ‘Ask me again when you come back from wherever it is you’re going.’

She left the ‘if’ unspoken.

‘I’ll never stop asking you. And I am coming back.’

She pushed herself up on one elbow and gazed down at him, her eyes searching.

‘I know you are.’

‘Then say that you’ll marry me. Now.’

‘I might.’

‘Tease.’

‘First temptress, now tease. Which is it to be?’

‘Can I have both at the same time?’

‘Anyone ever tell you that you’re greedy?’

‘Greedy for you maybe. I can never have enough of you.’

‘Prove it,’ she said.

So he did.
